For complete information visit www.InternationalDanceFestival.org. Mission The International Dance Festival – NYC was created · to promote greater dialogue between local, national and international artists, · to increase audience-media-presenter exposure, · to offer increased performance opportunities, · to present New York audiences with a diverse array of dance that represent the multiplicity in of the art form.
The International Dance Festival – NYC is a platform for · a full spectrum of performances representing all disciplines of dance, · ground floor, emerging, and established dance artists, as well as · opportunities for student choreographers and performers.
Brief History The first two festivals were produced by Worldwide Performance Opportunities under the 501(c)3 umbrella of The Field in New York City. Moving forward, the International Dance Festival-NYC is presented as one of the major programs of For Dance, Inc., the 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the creation, promotion, preservation, and presentation of original theatrical (dance) works by ground-floor, emerging and established dance artists encompassing all disciplines of dance. 1st Annual International Dance Festival – NYC 2002 was held at the unair- conditioned Theatre at St. Clements, a 134 seat off-Broadway house located in the Hells Kitchen section of NYC. Over a three-week period and in 100°+ heat, the festival presented 22 companies / choreographers in 18 performances. In addition to NYC choreographers, there were representative companies from Austria, Japan, Wisconsin, and Virginia. Companies represented diverse movement styles including contemporary ballet, modern, jazz, tap, musical theatre, hip hop, African, and Cuban. These performances reached 972 audience members. Through reduced price and free tickets, an additional 74 were able to see these performances. 2nd Annual International Dance Festival – NYC 2003 was moved to the air-conditioned Duke on 42nd Street, a 200 seat off-Broadway house located in the heart of the theatre district. This festival presented 36 companies/choreographers in 21 performances. Audience numbers climbed to 2870 and we were please to play to several sold-out houses. Reduced price and free tickets enabled an additional 250 audience members to experience dance for a total of 3120. 3rd Annual International Dance Festival – NYC 2004 returned to The Duke on 42nd Street and expanded its run to 5 weeks and 47 performances. The 2004 Festival presented 60 companies and provided four separate workshop/performance programs for young dancers. Our audiences increased to over 8000 and to be able to provide low-cost and or no-cost tickets to an additional 700. 4th Annual International Dance Festival – NYC 2005 moved to the Alvin Ailey Studios Citigroup Theater and added a 2nd venue on Manhattan’s East Side—the Dicapo Opera Theater. 5th Annual International Dance Festival– NYC 2006 will return to Dicapo Opera Theater July 10-30, 2006.

The Need for Increasing Opportunities The International Dance Festival-NYC is unique in that it targets emerging dance artists and choreographers in all dance disciplines. There is not another event like it in New York City. Many emerging dance companies do not have the money, infrastructure, or manpower to self-produce in New York City. IDF-NYC provides that opportunity in a professional, supportive, environment that nurtures the creative spirit. No matter how full the New York City dance calendar may get, we firmly believe that there is a real need and an audience for the work presented as part of IDF-NYC. We are looking to increase both the quantity and the diversity of dance audiences, introducing underserved populations to dance as well as introducing current dance audiences to new dance artists and new genres of dance. |
